March 20 to June 30, 2013
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art
“London Pictures” – this is the title of the latest cycle of works by British artists Gilbert & George, to which the exhibition of the same name at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle in Duisburg will be dedicated from March 20, 2013 and which will be presented for the first time in this large context. Around 70 “London Pictures” offer visitors the opportunity to engage intensively with this new section of Gilbert & George’s oeuvre.
By processing countless top headlines from the advertising practice of English newspaper sellers, the artists take a profound inventory of everyday human issues, subject them to their usual humanistic, emotional and empathetic gaze and use the means of their art to create a true pictorial epic. Work titles such as “BEATEN TO DEATH”, “CUTE KIDS”, “DOG”, “GRANDDAD”, “KNIFE MURDER”, “MONEY LAST” and “SCHOOL STRAIGHT”, to name but a few, are indicative of the wide range of topics covered. From the competition for the cutest child to murder and manslaughter, everything is included that also attracts people in this country: “London Pictures” and “London Problems”, according to the artists, are just as well “Duisburg Pictures” and “Duisburg Problems”. With a total of 292 individual works, this is the most comprehensive group of pictures by British artists to date, through which they not only get to the bottom of the “splendor, mystery and drama” of their home city of London, but also provide us with information about their view of the psycho-social nature of our modern Western societies.
