20 years is a reason to celebrate! We are celebrating 20 years and opening our doors to neighbors and new guests, Duisburg residents and visitors from all over the world, art lovers and all those who want to become one.

Looking back: in April 1999, the MKM opened its doors as an art museum for the first time in an industrial building from the turn of the century, which had served as a mill and warehouse until the 1970s. Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron, who are also currently working on the extension to the MKM, were responsible for converting it into a museum. The listed brick façade of the historic Küppersmühle, the old steel silos and the name “Küppersmühle” have been retained and have become trademarks of the museum.

The Bonner Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. (www.stiftungkunst.de) has been responsible for the conception, organization and operation of the MKM from the very beginning.

In addition to major temporary exhibitions, the MKM permanently displays works by the most important German post-war artists from the Ströher Collection, from K.O. Götz to Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. The first exhibition “Malerwald” by Jörg Immendorff opened on 18.4.1999. Important exhibitions of the last 20 years include “ChinArt” (2002), “Wonderlands” (2003), “The New Ten” (2004), “Gerhard Richter: Pictures from Private Collections” (2009), Olaf Metzel in the Capital of Culture year (2010), “Tony Cragg – Things in the Head” (2011), the retrospectives of Günther Uecker (2005), Stephan Balkenhol (2006), Peter Brüning (2007) or K.O. Götz (2014), the cross-city project “China8” (2015), the homage to Jannis Kounellis as part of “Kunst & Kohle” (2018) or the funding project “Jugend interpretiert Kunst” (2000-2017). A list of all exhibitions can be found in the attachment and in our online archive (www.museum-kueppersmuehle.de).
