CHINA 8 – Contemporary Art from China on the Rhine & Ruhr

May 15 to September 13, 2015
MKM Museum Küppersmühle für moderne Kunst
The Vocabulary of the Visible World – Painting

8 cities, 9 museums, around 120 artists and 500 works – CHINA 8 is the largest museum exhibition of contemporary art from China to date. Renowned artists meet young protagonists who are largely unknown in this country. Each of the participating museums on the Rhine and Ruhr will be presenting different categories according to their collection history and programmatic orientation: In the Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, sculptures can be seen under the title New Figuration, the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr shows installations and sculptures as models of irritation, the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen dedicates itself to ink painting and calligraphy with Tradition Today.

The Kunsthalle Recklinghausen spans a panorama of painting with young and critical art, the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst, Duisburg, brings together Chinese painters who have already celebrated national and international success under the title The Vocabulary of the Visible World. Video and sound as a medium of suspended time can be experienced at the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl, while the Osthaus Museum Hagen is showing installations and objects as paradigms of art. The Museum Folkwang in Essen is showing current Chinese photography with Works in Progress, while the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is bringing together works by various artists and genres as an entrée to the exhibition with Views of China. Together, this results in a multifaceted selection of the current art landscape of the People’s Republic of China. CHINA 8 sees itself as an invitation to experience a highly exciting and active art scene on a journey of discovery through the region.
