DAVID SCHNELL – WINDOWS

March 10 – June 18, 2017
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg

Large-format canvas works by David Schnell (born 1971), painter and graphic artist of the “New Leipzig School”, are the focus of the artist’s first major museum exhibition in the region: the MKM Museum Küppersmühle is showing around 60 of Schnell’s landscape visions, which are reminiscent of virtually imploding cyberspaces. Based on works from the last ten years, including five new paintings that David Schnell created especially for the exhibition at the MKM, the extensive selection of works takes stock of his oeuvre.

One of the new works – Windows – was the inspiration for the title of the exhibition. It is characteristic of the artist’s approach, who has set himself the goal of giving traditional panel painting a contemporary language and opening the view to new worlds without denying the existing ones. Schnell’s works are naturally located between Renaissance painting and the world of digital imagery. The content and means could not be more classical, and yet what we see is very much of today, or even tomorrow.

The exhibition DAVID SCHNELL – FENSTER is a project of the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V., curated by Eva Müller-Remmert. The project is made possible by the support of Sparkasse Duisburg.
