Over decades, National-Bank has built up a high-quality collection, which the MKM is presenting with selected items – on the occasion of the bank’s 100th anniversary this year. The special focus of the collection is on the region, on artists from North Rhine-Westphalia and the surroundings of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, some of whom have achieved world fame. “Einblicke” presents a comprehensive cross-section of the collection’s holdings, revealing the diversity and range of artists represented therein and their artistic practice.

For many years, the bank has been a constant in the promotion of culture in the country, and for more than 15 years it has also continuously accompanied the MKM.“(…) this commitment is extraordinary,” says MKM Director Walter Smerling. “It is supported by a great sense of art and stands for a forward-looking attitude: seeing is thinking, promoting art is an investment in education. It is about offering an encounter with art, about creating identity for employees and customers, about public participation. National-Bank is a flagship of German cultural promotion in the best sense of the word. Culture is, by its own admission, part of the company’s DNA.”

Accompanying program

ARTIST TALK | 09 July 2021 | 7.00 p.m.

Participating artists: Ulrich Erben, Peter Bömmels

Moderation: Prof. Walter Smerling

In conversation with Walter Smerling, two greats of painting meet who have shaped the development of art in very different ways. Ulrich Erben is a master of reduction and one of the most important representatives of color field painting and concrete art. His virtuoso use of color and light is an unmistakable characteristic of his work. Peter Bömmels is a co-founder of “Mühlheimer Freiheit” and an autodidact. His group painting, described as “wild” or “fierce,” revived figuration in Germany and gave it a new immediacy.

ARTIST TALK | August 13, 2021 | 7:00 p.m.

Participating artist: Cornelius Völker

Moderation: Prof. Walter Smerling

In conversation, Walter Smerling meets Cornelius Völker, whose works foreground classical painting as a craft. Völker uses everyday motifs – details of people or objects from the everyday world such as handbags, books, flowers, fruits. He confronts the viewer immediately with pure representationalism, emphasized by attractive coloration, an enormous power of the painting style and an exciting composition. In the exhibition “Einblicke – Art from the NATIONAL BANK”, Völker is represented with several works that more than demonstrate his craft.
