MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art

The MKM is dedicating its first retrospective in Germany to the Spanish conceptual artist Eugenio Cano. Cano, who lives and works in Madrid, has selected works from the last 17 years of his artistic career: Installations, sculptures and paintings.

Precision, clear formal structures and a strict geometrization of the individual elements characterize Cano’s work. Concrete objects are detached from their original relational structure, lose their original function and become pure forms that are placed in a new relationship to one another and thus have a different message for the viewer. The overall picture seems strange at first – only a closer look reveals Eugenio Cano’s underlying, deeply philosophical approach. The artist goes astray to find deeper truths. He is a provocateur and exposes thought structures and relationships that only appear to be fixed. At the MKM, Eugenio Cano offers insights into his view of the world, creating special and new everyday worlds. The relics of our civilization take on a new meaning, Cano’s reality is the illusion of reality.
