COLOR ABSOLUTE
KATHARINA GROSSE X GOTTHARD GRAUBNER
November 1, 2019 to January 26, 2020
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg
Color absolute: The MKM presents two outstanding painter personalities in a joint exhibition for the first time. From the perspective of the internationally acclaimed painter Katharina Grosse (born 1961), we look at the legendary “Farbraumkörper” by Gotthard Graubner (1930-2013) and vice versa. In the 1980s, Grosse attended Graubner’s class at the Düsseldorf Academy for several years, where she later taught herself.
The focus of the exhibition is the dialog between the works – and thus the examination of the nature and possibilities of color painting. The common starting point for both artists is the conviction of the timeless, existential power of color, which is directly transferred to the viewer and can be physically experienced. At the same time, the exhibition rooms make tangible the different painterly concepts that Katharina Grosse and Gotthard Graubner arrived at, with which they both artistically shaped their respective times.

Curator Eva Schmidt has not conceived the exhibition as a “retrospective of two artists unfolding side by side”, but as “exemplary juxtapositions, whereby the connecting link is of course the non-objective color painting of both.” On display are around 55 works, some of which are large-scale. On the one hand, they draw attention to what connects them: the interest in textiles, the immaterial, the significance of threshold works that hint at the artists’ main work. On the other hand, the major differences in the visual language are clearly recognizable: calm, stillness and gravity in Gotthard Graubner’s work, energetic gesture, dynamic spray technique and multi-layered covering strategies in Katharina Grosse’s work. The centerpieces of the exhibition are a 17-meter-long cloth work by Grosse and Graubner’s space-filling “Assisi Cycle”.
