GERHARD RICHTER | PICTURES FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS

May 21 to August 23, 2009
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art

From May 21 to August 23, 2009, the MKM is presenting one of the most important and influential artists of our time: Gerhard Richter. The exhibition “Pictures from Private Collections” shows around 80 paintings created between 1963 and 2007. The diversity on display lends the show a retrospective character and presents Richter’s groundbreaking work in all its complexity, including works that are not always accessible to the public. The paintings come from the Böckmann (Berlin), Frieder Burda (Baden-Baden) and Ströher (MKM / Darmstadt) collections as well as another private collection. In addition, the artist has made works from his own collection available for the exhibition.

Early masterpieces from the Ströher Collection, which is housed in the Museum Küppersmühle, will be on display, such as the figurative photo paintings “Family by the Sea” and “Cow” (1964), which are characterized by softly interwoven shades of grey, as well as large-format abstract works such as “Courbet” (1986) and “Alps II” (1968/69), a work that explores the fine line between figurative and abstract painting. In addition to the exhibition, the collection room in the MKM, where other important abstract works by Richter from the Ströher Collection are on display, will remain open to visitors.
