Inside // Outside | Interior and outlook in contemporary German photography

October 31, 2008 to January 18, 2009
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art

From October 31, 2008 to January 18, 2009, the MKM is embarking on a search for space with the extensive photography exhibition “Inside // Outside”. Interior space and views, spaces and spatial boundaries are the major themes addressed by 16 contemporary German artists.

The show presents around 70 works from the 1990s to the present day by Uta Barth, Laurenz Berges, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Thomas Florschuetz, Günther Förg, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Sabine Hornig, Edgar Lissel, Wiebke Loeper, Beatrice Minda, Ricarda Roggan, Hans-Christian Schink, Florian Slotawa and Heidi Specker. The spectrum is wide-ranging, from wall installations with small picture formats to multi-part picture series and monumental large formats several meters long.

Depictions of space have been one of the major themes of the medium since the beginning of photography, whereby the translation of three-dimensional space into the two-dimensional surface of the pictorial space represents a particular challenge. The approach to space can be documentary, manipulative or emotional. Spaces are carriers of memory, the absence of people in almost all the photographs in the exhibition refers back to people and tells us a lot about them, because these places take on their actual function through human activity. The traces in the space refer to its identity and turn the space into a defined place.
