Joseph Beuys – Anselm Kiefer | Drawings, Gouaches, Books

June 29 to September 30, 2012
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art

Joseph Beuys and Anselm Kiefer, two greats of German art, meet for the first time in this constellation. Both have created outstanding works on paper that play an important role in their oeuvre. The Museum Küppersmühle is showing over 200 works from the years 1948 to 2012, including works from the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the mumok in Vienna.

The artists shared an intensive dialog and high mutual esteem. Beuys was the first to show Kiefer artistic appreciation and encourage him on his path. He can be regarded as Kiefer’s mentor and spontaneously made him a “master student”, although Kiefer only attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy sporadically. For Kiefer, who was closely involved in the exhibition, Beuys is still the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century.
