Youth Interprets Art | Deutsche Bank Foundation Youth Art Prize

January 26 to February 7, 2010
at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg

For the ninth time, the Küppersmühle Museum will host the most highly endowed national youth art prize for the “Jugend interpretiert Kunst” competition. 20 schools from all over Germany had the opportunity to spend an individual day visiting the Küppersmühle Museum and to engage intensively with modern art outside of the classroom. Under the guidance of art educators, the young people were able to experience the artworks of Baselitz, Kiefer, Richter and others in detail in the original, ask questions, discuss, analyze and finally create their own works.
These works by the pupils have now been evaluated by the jury, which includes the artists Abraham David Christian and Markus Lüpertz, advertising agency boss Coordt von Mannstein, MKM Director Walter Smerling and the collector Sylvia Ströher. After detailed consideration and lively discussion, the decision was unanimous. The jury was particularly pleased with the consistently high standard and great commitment of all the works submitted. An important criterion in the evaluation was the creative independence in dealing with the works of art in the museum.
