June 1 to August 26, 2007
at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg
The MKM presents important positions from the Bulgarian and Romanian art scenes. The selection includes internationally renowned artists as well as influential protagonists of the national art scenes and newcomers. On display are works by Luchezar Boyadjiev, Pravdoliub Ivanov, Oda Jaune, Kiril Prashkov, Svetlin Roussev and Nedko Solakov from Bulgaria as well as Marius Bercea, Dumitru Gorzo, Gili Mocanu, Ramona Raus and Ioan Sbârciu from Romania. The show, with which we would like to celebrate the recent accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU, will open on May 31 at 8 pm.
The insight into the artistic production of both countries is a – thoroughly personal – stocktaking by the artistic commissioner and the curators. What is happening in the art scenes of both countries? Which artistic centers are formative, which content and media-specific tendencies are emerging? Which artists already have a significant influence, and which new artists need to be introduced? Against the background of these questions, the commissioner of the exhibition, Markus Lüpertz, and the two curators Iara Boubnova and Liviana Dan have made their selection. Markus Lüpertz has held a professorship at the Cluj Academy of Art for several years; Iara Boubnova works internationally as a curator and heads the Institute of Contemporary Art in Sofia, among others; Liviana Dan is an art critic and works as a curator for the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, among others.
