The Foundation for Art and Culture mourns the death of K.O. Götz

K.O. Götz's work was decisive for the development of German post-war art. The painter shaped Art Informel nationally and internationally like no other.

The old master of German Art Informel died last Saturday at the age of 103

His aim was to assert the poetic in painting – without the means of representationalism. He succeeded.

He was the teacher of an entire dynasty of German artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Franz Erhard Walther, Rissa and many others. He showed them painterly possibilities beyond the valid rules and, above all, always looked beyond his own nose.

Karl Otto Götz was one of the artists who restored cultural dignity to our country after 1945 and was one of these important messengers of freedom. This freedom was reflected in his artistic approach throughout his life.” MKM Director Walter Smerling describes K.O. Götz’s position as a painter and inspiring professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (1959 – 1979). “K.O. Götz leaves behind a unique artistic legacy, which we at Museum Küppersmühle will continue to dedicate ourselves to preserving in his memory.”
