BERLIN 1965: THE REINVENTION OF PAINTING
January 4, 2018 | 11 a.m.
Artist talk and exhibition tour
With Bernd Koberling (artist), Markus Lüpertz (artist), Christian Malycha (curator) and Walter Smerling (Director MKM)
Stays in Swedish Lapland and northern Norway allowed Koberling to find the landscape as a theme in his life. As a result, he created “Fjords and Cabin Paintings”, which seem just as simple, direct and original as the experience of nature in the Arctic Circle. The painter exhibited them for the first time in 1965 under the title Sonderromantik at the Großgörschen 35 self-help gallery founded by artists in Berlin. A short time later, Markus Lüpertz presented his dithyrambic paintings there, art that stands in the way and thus his very own artistic response.
We cordially invite you to explore the “reinvention of painting” and its further development on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. in an artist talk with Bernd Koberling and Markus Lüpertz. Other participants in the discussion will be Christian Malycha, curator of the Koberling exhibition at the MKM, and Walter Smerling, Director of the Museum Küppersmühle. A joint tour of Bernd Koberling’s exhibition will conclude the program and provide an insight into his oeuvre.
