FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE MUSEUM – A contest at the MUSEUM KÜPPERSMÜHLE on the occasion of the exhibition “Miquel Barceló – Vida y Muerte”.
Free museum visit 500 euros prize money for the winning class
Dear pupils,
the exhibition „MIQUEL BARCELÓ. VIDA Y MUERTE ” at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle in Duisburg is something very special. For the first time in Germany, the art of the currently most important Spanish artist is being honored in a large-scale solo exhibition.
Miquel Barceló, who was born in Mallorca in 1957, is known for his diverse and colorful works, which range from large-format paintings, ceramics and bronze sculptures to sketchbooks and book illustrations. It is not surprising that his art is mentioned in the same breath as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, as he himself is well on the way to becoming a classic.
He is a nomad. His pictures tell of the everyday, of life and death and also of foreign and distant worlds – of Africa, where he lives and works from time to time, of the Catalan coast and the Balearic Islands, where he was born and grew up, and of the underwater world of the sea, which he explores time and again as a diver. The realism of his depiction often reveals itself abruptly, behind a seemingly abstract and very physical style of painting. Miquel Barceló is a world artist whose work spans from the Palaeolithic cave paintings of Altamira and Lascaux to the present day.
