Painting as a search for freedom, as an antithesis to ideology and as an expression of independence: this basic artistic understanding underlies the works of Erwin Bechtold (*1925 in Cologne). As a radical consequence, he decided against inheriting the family business and for a life as a freelance artist and graphic designer and emigrated to Spain in the 1950s. Bechtold began his artistic career in the environment of Franco oppositional artistic circles, where nocturnal secret meetings were nothing unusual. Today he is one of the most important representatives of abstract post-war art in Germany and Spain.
In April, Erwin Bechtold celebrates his 95th birthday – and is still in the studio almost every day. To mark the occasion, the MKM Museum Küppersmühle is showing a comprehensive, retrospective exhibition of works from seven decades in which the artist has been intensively involved.

Im Zentrum der abstrakten Werke steht die Ambivalenz von Ordnung und Unordnung, von Gestalten und (Zer)Stören. Sie findet sich im Aufbau der Bilder, aber auch in deren markanter, reliefartiger Oberflächenstruktur mit ihren Rissen und Brüchen. Gegensätze, so der Künstler, sollten in jedem guten Bild eine Rolle spielen. Das fängt bei der weitgehenden Reduktion seiner Palette auf Schwarz und Weiß an und geht bis zur Dekonstruktion geometrischer Grundformen. Zentrales Element in fast allen Werken ist die Beziehung zwischen der Linie als emotionaler Komponente und dem Raum als rationaler Komponente: „Das Beziehungsgeflecht von Gefühl und Ratio ist wesentlich für meine Arbeit. Meine geometrischen Formen werden häufig durchbrochen von unkontrollierten, spontanen Gesten.“

Auch der Kontrast von gleißendem Südlicht und tiefem Schatten ist in Bechtolds Bilder eingeflossen, ebenso wie die kubische Architektur auf Ibiza mit ihrer Spannung zwischen Geometrie und Handwerk. Bildtitel wie Discordia beschreiben das System, in dem sich Bechtold bewegt: Ordnungen sind dazu da, gestört zu werden: “Einem Architekten nicht unähnlich baue ich meine Bilder. Der Mensch steht im Mittelpunkt meiner Arbeit – und er lebt, wie die Natur, in Kontrasten, Spannungen, Störungen. Wir sind in das Spiel der geordneten Unordnung, der ungeordneten Ordnung existentiell eingebunden. Meine Bilder sind der Versuch, diese komplexe Unergründlichkeit in die künstlerische Wirklichkeit umzusetzen.”
Die Ausstellungspräsentation folgt keiner Chronologie, sondern orientiert sich an der künstlerischen Aussage, ausgehend von frühen informellen bis hin zu geometrisch angelegten Gemälden und Papierarbeiten, die das Prinzip der Störung verbindet. In den jüngeren Arbeiten verbinden sich gestisch-zeichnerische und konstruktiv-geometrische Werkanteile und bringen die Spannung zwischen der Malerei „aus dem Bauch“ (das Gestische) und der „intellektuellen“ Malerei (das Geometrische) zusammen.

Biografisches
Erwin Bechtold wurde 1925 in Köln geboren. In den 1950er-Jahren ging er zunächst nach Paris, anschließend nach Barcelona. Seit 1958 lebt er auf Ibiza, fasziniert von der dortigen traditionellen Bauweise und den Lichtverhältnissen. Gefragt, wie man auf der Mittelmeer-Insel arbeiten kann, ohne der Farbe zu erliegen, hält Bechtold entgegen: „Schwarz ist für mich eine Farbe. Voller Nuancen. Mehr Farbe lenkt zu sehr ab. Wo viel Licht ist, ist auch Schatten, und gerade dieses helle Licht bringt besonders dunkle, schwarze Schatten hervor. Dieser Gegensatz interessiert mich. Ibiza ist für mich eine Welt der Kontraste.“
1968 präsentierte Bechtold seine Werke auf der documenta in Kassel. Seine Bilder und Grafiken finden sich in zahlreichen wichtigen Sammlungen, darunter Fundació Juan Miro (Barcelona), Museo Nacional Reina Sofía (Madrid), Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Bonn), Sammlung Ströher (Duisburg/Darmstadt), Museum Ludwig (Köln), Von der Heydt-Museum (Wuppertal), Tate Gallery (London), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh/USA), Graphische Sammlung Albertina (Wien) u.a.
