November 2017 – January 28, 2018
MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg
Koberling’s work is presented in nine rooms/chapters, starting with the so-called “Überspannungen” of the 1960s, which made him famous, through the expressive paintings from the “Neue Wilde” period (1970s/80s) to the immediate present, in which the artist once again completely reinvents himself. The works from the last twelve years are the focus of the exhibition and are being shown in a museum for the first time at the MKM. Some of the works were created especially for the exhibition.
The common thread running through the exhibition follows Koberling’s life theme: nature as the center of art, the landscape as a symbol of human existence. Here and there, ruggedness and fragility collide and the spectrum of possibilities varies between light and shadow, existence and decay, preservation and renewal.
“Bernd Koberling is one of those artists who has constantly reinvented himself, but has always stuck to his life’s theme – the landscape as a symbol of human existence. In his painting, he expresses the universal and timeless nature and embarks on a journey into eternity, into everywhere and nowhere. At least that’s how I read his paintings.” (Walter Smerling, Director MKM)
The exhibition is made possible by NATIONAL-BANK Aktiengesellschaft.
