Art meets… FORGERY

It is not only collectors, dealers, experts and museum directors who are increasingly affected by art forgery, but also the artists whose works are fraudulently imitated. How do they deal with the issue themselves?

From Albrecht Dürer to Sigmar Polke: Artists and Forgeries – a Special Relationship

Thu, 12 May 2022 | 6:30 pm MKM Museum für Moderne Kunst, Duisburg

It is not only collectors, dealers, experts and museum directors who are increasingly affected by art forgery, but also the artists whose works are fraudulently imitated. How do they deal with the issue themselves? Mostly they try to defend themselves against the counterfeiters. But sometimes they accept the forgeries afterwards or reflect the fraud in a pictorial way. Some artists even actively act as forgers of their own or others’ works. Some, on the other hand, afford a more humorous con at the expense of the art world. In his art-historical lecture, forgery expert Hubertus Butin from Berlin illuminates the diverse and sometimes bizarre ways in which artists deal with their forgeries.
