VISITORS’ SCHOOL BY BAZON BROCK
The “thinker on duty” celebrates the magician of Arte Povera: Bazon Brock invites you to the visitors’ school in the exhibition Homage to Jannis Kounellis.
The visitors’ schools of the “artist without a work” and professor emeritus of aesthetics have been legendary since he first held them at the documenta in 1968. The work of Jannis Kounellis has repeatedly been the subject of Brock’s unconventional art observations since his first participation in 1972. Now, around four decades later, there is a revival at the Küppersmühle Museum – and participants can look forward to anything but a guided tour in the traditional sense.
10,- EUR incl. Admission to the temporary exhibition
Registration: office@xn--kp-xka.vereda.de or T 0203 30 19 48 -11 (Wed-Sun)

UR-RUHR. Music theater performance
Theaitetos Trio
The Theaitetos trio went in search of the end of mining in the Ruhr area and found what they were looking for. Songs are sung, stories are told, games are played and dancing takes place. The main role, however, belongs to the seemingly everyday, often unknown, close and at the same time distant, bizarre and profane industrial world, which has disappeared in its original form.
Duration approx. 60 minutes

DEMOLITION HAMMER CONCERT
Christof Schläger
The miners’ nightmare is the “Schlagende Wetter”, a gas explosion underground. Compressed air is the solution, there are no sparks. The result is a veritable cosmos of compressed air sound, filled with hissing valves, howling compressed air motors and rattling pneumatic hammers. Christof Schläger transforms the machine parts into real wonders of sound art. Hot air becomes astonishingly beautiful noise that follows a precise score. A very special experience for eyes and ears when the dismantling hammers start to dance and sing.
Duration approx. 25 minutes | Takes place outside.

CARBON. A short world tour of coal
CIE. Freaks & Strangers
The Dresden ensemble has developed a puppet theater for adults especially for the “Art & Coal” exhibition. Using various projections and a theater machine, as was common in the 19th century, the audience embarks on a journey from Oelsnitz in Saxony via the Ruhr region to Albania in Colombia. Portraits, fantasies, dreams and realities collide – life with, from and without mining. The journey is accompanied by the puppet “El hombre”. She is the human being par excellence and on a constant quest for the good life.
CARBON is a cooperation between the RuhrKunstMuseen and FIDENA – Figurentheater der Nationen.
Please note that the space available here is very limited. Reservation by e-mail or by telephone on T 0203 93 55 54 723
Duration approx. 60 minutes

GERMINAL. Music-Film-Performance
With Martin Blume, Gunda Gottschalk, Eckard Koltermann
Germinal is a 1913 classic silent film by Albert Capellani, based on the novel of the same name by Emile Zola, which portrays the subject of mining in a haunting and realistic way. It forms the starting point for a musical image-sound experiment. With clarinet, viola and percussion instruments, the three musicians create an energetic interplay between film and music, in which improvisation is also allowed at times.

WHO LIVE IN THE SHADOWS
Rottstr 5 Theater
The performance “Die im Schatten leben” by the Rottstr 5 Theater is based on the drama of the same name by Emil Rosenow from 1899, which has now almost been forgotten. In an almost unique way, the author describes the living conditions in a mining colony in the Ruhr area. Under the direction of Hans Dreher, a small ensemble takes a moving and at the same time somnambulistic look at the life’s work of coal mining.
Duration approx. 35 minutes

OPEN OUT
Film evening and discussion with Rainer Komers
The filmmaker Rainer Komers, who lives in Berlin and Mülheim, has long been concerned with the Ruhr region and the structural change of recent decades. At the MKM, he is showing his film “Ofen aus” (1995) – a long-term observation of the closure of the Krupp steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen, the consequences for those affected and how they deal with inevitability and the social plan. Afterwards, the filmmaker will be available for a discussion.
Moderation: Jörg Mascherrek
Duration approx. 120 minutes
