Martin Assig’s art moves in an exciting intermediate space where signs and texts, images and allusions come together to amaze us; it is also about “Exercises in Astonishment”, as one of the 10 chapters of this large-format exhibition is entitled. Are there traditions that inspire him? How does he work, how does he think? What language does he speak? These are possibly questions that arise when looking at his pictures. Perhaps we will get a little closer to the answers – not to take the mystery out of the works of art, but to see even more.
