At the center of the exhibition is Jannis Kounellis, pioneer of Arte Povera, with his expansive installations made of coal, steel and iron. As a tribute to Kounellis, who died in 2017, Ayşe Erkmen, Anselm Kiefer, Michael Sailstorfer, Sun Xun, Timm Ulrichs and Bernar Venet are staging their own spaces in which they celebrate industrial materials.
Speakers at the opening included Armin Laschet, the Chairman of the Brost Foundation, Wolfgang Heit, the curator of the exhibition, Ferdinand Ullrich, and Walter Smerling, Director of the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst.
